I have noticed increased difficulty balancing. Why would I use a cane and how do I use it?
At some point, many people experience difficulties with balance, and must decide whether or not to use an assistive device to help aid with balance. For those who could benefit from a little bit of extra stability but do not need as much assistance that a walker gives, a cane is an excellent choice. A cane helps to provide an extra point of contact with the ground, and widens the base of support that someone has to maintain extra balance. Canes are used by the arms, and must require some level of grip strength to hold the handle of the cane.
In addition to helping with balance, canes can help offload some of the weight of the body on joints such as the hip or knee, and can therefore allow individuals to walk or stand with decreased pain and for longer distances and periods of time. In such instances, canes should be held in the hand opposite to the painful leg. For example, if your left hip or knee is painful, you should hold the cane in your right hand and reach forward with it as you swing your left leg during walking.
It is important to decide with a physical therapist if using an assistive device is a good idea, because there are some cases where reliance on assistive devices may lead to further decline in ability.
